Another Great Weekend

Seeing this headline, I am sure that many may think that I would be writing about a great sports weekend.  No I am not using this space to brag up my ILLINI (even though they just pounded Purdue), I was referring to the weekend that is just finishing here at St.John’s UMC in Davenport.  It all started with the UMW FUNdraiser Jazz and Just Deserts.  Ray W. and the Celebration band did a great job with the music, and the deserts were amazing.  This was my first experience with this event but I declare it to be a tremendous success.  Obviously Linda J and here UMW ladies know how to raise money, and everyone there had a great time.

Saturday brought Jesus Country, and showing off his versatility Ray was there with members of the Jesus Country Band and the Celebration Band performing as only that group can.  Sunday morning marked the first full worship day for our new guy Dave M.  He did an awesome job helping to prepare the service, leading the choir, and the Celebration service music.  Highlights of the Classic service included great participation by Troop 6 Boy Scouts, a beautiful choir piece that included violin throughout with the voices and piano, and my favorite the baptism of Griffin Cotton.  It was a beautiful service.

Immediately after the Classic service was over, I headed across the street for our Living Faith! service at 945.  We had another full house with many visitors.  That group is growing stronger every week, and the band sounded great under the leadership of Linda G.  We also shared in the Lord’s Table at that service.

The Celebration service got going right on the heels of Living Faith! at 1100, I got there just in time to finish preparations for a great service.  Ray made it a triple play this weekend by singing with this group too.  Dave and Carrie sang and played with the group for the first time too.  The music was awesome as I have come to expect here.  I preached at this service too, doing Part 4 of the Fireproof series.  Today’s sermon was not easy, but I feel that it needed to be heard.

We closed the early part of the day with a meal after the Celebration service.  Carl and Bonnie do an amazing job with those meals.  We are blessed to have them take on such a big project.  The only drag that I have on the weekend is that I go on call at the hospital at 4pm until 8 tomorrow morning.  I do not mind the being on call, I just do not sleep very well while I wait for that pager to go off.  Hope all who read this have had just as good of a weekend and a better week to come.

Peace

Ron

The regular band does a good job for the most part at Jesus Country. But does the new guy have any plans for the service?

The bad thing about going to Saturday night service is not hearing the ‘mainstream’ rumblings about church life and politics. Oddly enough, that is also the good thing about going to Saturday night service.
